Tigert Named I-AAA Scholar-Athlete

Adrian Tigert of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been named a Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete.
The men's basketball senior, who completed his undergraduate degree last spring and spent this school year working toward his masters degree in business, is the first winner from UWM in the four-year history of the awards. He is one of 11 Division I-AAA men's players named to the team.
The award adds to a stellar senior season for Tigert, who earned All-Horizon League Second-Team honors, league all-defensive team honors and was named the Horizon League Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Tigert helped the Panthers to their third-straight Horizon League regular season title and to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year. In the tournament, the Panthers knocked off Oklahoma in the first round before falling to eventual national champion Florida in the second round. Tigert scored 27 points in the loss to the Gators. In the classroom, Tigert posted a 3.20 grade-point average in the first semester.
Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for these awards. Each of the nominees was required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials. Candidates must have reached sophomore athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. The nominees must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.

Panthers Fall To Florida In NCAA Second Round, 82-60

Corey Brewer scored 23 points and Joakim Noah added 17 as the University of Florida downed the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 82-60 Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Florida advanced to the semifinals of the Minneapolis Regional, the first time the team has escaped the opening weekend of the tourney since 2000.
Milwaukee finishes its season at 22-9 after winning at least one game in the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season.
Adrian Tigert led the Panthers with a career-high 27 points.
UWM found it difficult to contain the athleticism and size of the Gators (29-6), who won the SEC Tournament last weekend and appear poised for another run to the Final Four.
"We played the way we've been doing it all year and we just met an opponent that was bigger than us," Milwaukee head coach Rob Jeter said. "We couldn't match their size. We tried, but we just couldn't."
Meanwhile, while the Panthers struggled much of the game on offense, Tigert posted the best offensive night of his career in his final UWM appearance.
"Look at his stat line," Jeter said. "He's been like this for us all year. He just takes what the other teams will give and he's a very patient player."
Led by Brewer, Noah, Al Horford and Taurean Green - all sophomores - Florida led from its first possession and dominated much of the game. The Gators led by 13 in the first half and opened up a 15-point advantage midway through the second half. It was arguably the best coach Billy Donovan's team has played all season. And, it came in front of a partisan crowd at Veterans Memorial Arena, about 75 miles from the school's campus.

"Offensively, I thought we had very good balance," Donovan said. "Our front court players did a good job in and around the basket. Corey had a very good game shooting the basketball. I think the one thing that helped us in the first half was our big lineup. When we went to the big lineup, we hurt them on the backboards a little bit."
The Gators built an early 13-point lead only to see the Panthers rally to within 24-20 with 4:21 remaining in the half. But, with Tucker and then Tigert on the bench with two fouls, Florida rebuilt its lead to eight points by halftime.
Tigert hit a three on the first possession of the second half to pull Milwaukee back within five, and the Panthers were still within six with 18:23 to play after a Tigert jumper in the lane.
But, the Gators scored six-straight points to rebuild a 12-point lead and the Panthers would never get closer than nine the rest of the way.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee vs. Butler

After Wisconsin-Milwaukee won the Horizon League Tournament and an automatic bid to NCAA Tournament, first-year coach Rob Jeter cut down the nets.
Then he cut loose.
"I thought we couldn't score 87 points with the swing," Jeter said, taking a good-natured swipe at critics who thought his halfcourt offense would turn last year's NCAA regional semifinalists into a walking yawnfest.
Boo Davis scored 18 points to help the Panthers beat Butler 87-71 Tuesday night, earning the league's NCAA berth for the third time in four years.
Jeter, hired after Bruce Pearl left for Tennessee, takes most of his coaching and personality cues from former boss Bo Ryan, the respected but aloof coach at Wisconsin. Jeter showed a similar buttoned-down personality for most of his first season at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but loosened up after Tuesday's victory.
Wearing remnants of the net he and the players cut down around his neck, Jeter was asked if he had any actual dance moves to show off at the so-called "big dance."
"That's how I met my wife at a party," Jeter responded. "She liked to feel my moves, I guess."

Joah Tucker scored 24 points and Boo Davis 22 as Wisconsin-Milwaukee defeated Detroit 76-57 to clinch at least a share of the Horizon League regular season championship Tuesday night.The Panthers (19-8, 12-4) hit a season-high 14 3-pointers to snap a two-game losing streak. Davis and Tucker both had five 3-pointers. Allan Hanson had three 3-pointers and scored 10 points.Milwaukee won the title outright the last two football seasons, but second-place Butler (10-4) can tie the Panthers by winning its last two games against Youngstown State and Detroit. Milwaukee was without starting center Adrian Tigert, who hurt his back Feb. 11 in an 86-57 victory over Cleveland State.Brandon Cotton scored 16 points for the Titans (14-15, 7-8), who lost their third straight game to the Panthers. Milwaukee beat Detroit 72-71 on Jan. 18 and 59-58 last March 8 for the league tournament championship. That victory gave the Panthers a berth in the NCAA tournament and they went all the way to the Sweet Sixteen. Davis hit his second straight 3-pointer with 15:24 left in the second half to give the Panthers a 54-24 lead. His 3-pointers ended an 11-2 run to open the second period that widened Milwaukee's 21-point halftime lead to 30 points.Hanson made his third 3-pointer and Milwaukee's 10th of the game at the buzzer to end the first half and put the Panthers ahead 43-22. A basket by Jon Goode gave the Titans an 11-10 lead. But Tucker had a ferocious dunk with 11:37 left to put the Panthers ahead for good in the game at 12-11 and he followed it with his third 3-pointer for a 15-11 advantage.It was the final regular season game for seven Milwaukee seniors -- Tigert, Mark Pancratz, Chris Hill, Tucker, Jason McCoy, Davis and Derrick Ford.

Brandon Polk scored a team-high 18 points in Butler's 63-60 overtime win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Butler's A.J. Graves hit a 3-pointer that tied the game at 56 with 2 seconds left in regulation. Joah Tucker gave the Panthers a 58-56 lead in overtime with 2:50 left on a fast-break layup, but Butler outscored the Panthers 5-1 to seize control of the game.
Tucker was the game's leading scorer with 26 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out four assists. Adrian Tigert scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Panthers (16-6, 9-3 Horizon League).
Graves finished with 13 points for Butler and Brandon Crone scored 15.
The win moved Butler into a first-place tie with the Panthers in the Horizon League. Wisconsin-Milwaukee dropped its second game in a row and just its third in the past 15 games, while Butler (14-8, 7-3) won its fifth consecutive game.
Butler has won 88 of its past 101 home games and maintain therewith pretty good betting odds.
